German Stockslagers

The following four-generation genealogy of Alexander Stocklager’s ancestors was provided to me by V. Stern in 1996, based on the research of Glen Stockslager.  I make no claims to ownership or accuracy.

 

Heinrich Stockschleder (c1600 – 15 August 1659)

He was born c1600 somewhere in Germany. He lived in Hohenbetzdorf, Kirchen parish, Rhinland principality after 1645. He died 15 August 1679 in Betzdorf, Rhinland and was buried in Hoenbetzdorf the following day according to parish records. His wife was Sybilla. She died in the same location on 25 December 1673.

They were Catholic, appearing in the records of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Kirchen. The parish records begin in 1645, at which time Heinrich and Sybilla were already married with several children. They were the only people of this name in the parish, meaning he had probably come from some other location. Heinrich was a Hoffman, meaning that he worked for the local estate, probably as a farmer.

They had the following children:

Arnold Stockschleder (8 September 1652 – March 1708)

Arnold “Nolte” Stockschleder was born in Hohenbetzdorf and christened at St. Michael’s Church. As an adult, he lived in nearby Budenholz in the parish of Kirchen. He died there sometime in March 1708. Like his parents, he was Catholic. He first married Ellen “Ehla” Latsch, daughter of Heinrich and Agnes Latsch, on 3 September 1675 in Budenholz. They had seven children before Ellen died on 25 February 1689. Arnold then married Catharina Weer on 4 October 1689. Arnold and Catharina had six more children. Note that the majority of children did not live to adulthood.

Johanes Diederich Stockschlager (27 September 1676 – 9 January 1736)

He was born in Budenholz in the principality of Rhinland and christened in St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He married Eva Gertrude Berg (1680 – c1730), daughter of Johanes and Margarethe Berg, in Kirchen parish on 1 August 1697. They moved to nearby Ofhausen about 1706 and then to Eissenstein, Pfalz, Bavaria about 1717. This was in the modern day Palatinate. The spelling of the name changed at about the same time, perhaps a regional difference.   Eva predeceased him by a few years, and he and his youngest children moved into the household of his oldest son. Johanes died in Kircheimbolanden, Pfalz, Bavaria on 9 January 1736 and was buried the next day in the local Catholic church. They had twelve children, only five of whom loved to adulthood:

  11. Johanes Adam Stockschlager (1720 – aft 1762)

Johannis Stockschlager (2 May 1700 – 1759)

He was born 2 May 1700 in Budenholz, Rhinland and christened the same day at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in the parish of Kirchen. He moved with his parents and other relatives into Eissenstein about 1717 and married a few years later. He first married Anna Margarethe Nagel, daughter of Philip and Judith Nagel, on 2 October 1720 in Kircheimbolanden, Pfalz, Bavaria. They settled in nearby Kohlhute and had four children before Anna Margarethe died around 1728-9. Johannis next married Anna Martha1, and had nine more children.

Johannis and his brother Alexander came to Pennsylvania on the ship Molly and took the oath in Philadelphia on 16 October 1741.2  They are the only persons named Stockslager or similar mentioned among the Philadelphia ship passenger lists.   According to V. Stern, Johannis and his family next show up in the records Bally, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Glen Stockslager thinks he died about 1756 in Bockhouse, Patterson Creek in what is now West Virginia.

He had thirteen children, the first four by Anna Margarethe Nagel and the final nine by Anna Martha:

  1. Her surname is uncertain. After Johannis’ death about 1759 she apparently married his brother Alexander. Alexander Stockschlager’s 1762 will in Lancaster County gives lands to his wife Anna Martha which were to pass, upon her death, to Adam Stockslager and Phillip Stockslager, two of the children of my said wife by her former husband. It is not clear whether she was the daughter of Andreas Coffman whose heirs, including Ann wife of Alexander Stockslegle sold property in 1762. That person may have been the wife of the son Alexander Stockslager. [↩]
