This tax list is incomplete, and lists only two Cooks: Cornelius Cook Sr. and Thomas Cook
Rowan County included all or part of nearly 30 present counties.
One of several of the 1768 tax lists covered some part of what was about to become Surry County. For the tax lists through 1775, tithables were males over 16 and certain slaves.
Jacob Laesch’s List (which included large portions of present Surry and Yadkin Counties.)
[These entries consecutive, apparently located in or near present Stokes County]
Charles Angel – 1
Henry Cook & for John Miller – 2
William Poole & son John Poole
& James, William, & Thomas Cook – 5
[This among a list of persons in present Surry County]
Wm. Nichols Cook - 1
Although this list is often represented to be a 1768 tax list, there is no date on the list and therefore date is actually undetermined. It is properly viewed as a list of “about” 1768. The Rowan court record assigning justices to the tax districts for the 1768 tax did not assign this district to Gideon Wright, thus it is more likely a 1769 or 1770 list. Also note that the list is certainly for what would later be Surry, for the act creating Surry County in 1770 (to be effective in 1771) required that the court be held at Gideon Wright’s house until a courthouse could be built.
Gideon Wright’s list (which included parts of present Yadkin, Surry and Wilkes Counties)
Ambrose Bramlet 1
Jno. Shores - 1
Nichols Cook – 1 [erroneously transcribed as “Nicholas’ but is “Nichols” in the original]
Wm Burch - 1
Wm Ridge - 4
The original lists, now lost, were copied into an alphabetical combined list for the entire county. Only names and polls are listed, which include:
Henry, William & John Burch
Martin Burch
Benjamin Burch
James & William Meredith
Several Martins
Several Cockerhams
Ambrose Bramlet - 1
Cornelius Cook – 1
Henry Cook – 1
Abel Cook – 4
Joshua Cooks – 2 [“Cox”?]
William Nichols Cook – 1 [this entry was misfiled under “N”s when list was alphabetized]
This list is in enumeration sequence by district, with names and polls only. Locations are deduced from the land locations of polltakers and the known locations of a few entries. Tithables are males over 16 and certain slaves.
Martin Armstrong’s district (present Yadkin County)
Joseph Williams, Robert Lanier, John Harrison, John Robertson + five Negroes - 9
Gray Bynum’s district (present Stokes)
John Cook – 1
Charles Angle & son Charles – 2 [consecutive with next entry]

McAnnally’s district (lower Stokes)

Samuel Freeman’s district (central Surry and upper Yadkin along river)
Olliver Robards & Jesse Sunley, John Cook, Thomas Pagit & two Negroes – 6[1]

Ambrose Bramlet –1
William Nickles Cook & John Cook – 2 [this John Cook might be counted twice]
David Riggs –1
William Ridge, Godfrey Ridge & negros Hanner & Cato – 1
John Burch & William Burch –2
Joseph Johnson –1
All of the tax lists to and including this point counted tithables – males over 16 and certain slaves. Only three of the districts survive, covering perhaps 25% of the population of the county. Two of these lists have Cooks:
Hudspeth’s district (lower Surry & along part of the Yadkin River):
Richard Cook & Joseph Warburton – 2
Boman Cast & John Cooke – 2
Richard Murphy’s district (apparently present Yadkin)
William Critchfield – 1 [consecutive with next entry]
John Critchfield – 1
William Burch – 1
John Cook & 3 negroes James, Jo & James (sic) – 4
Samuel Critchfield – 1 [consecutive with next entry]
Nathaniel Critchfield – 1
Nichols Cook – 1 [consecutive with next entry]

Joseph Johnson - 1
John Burch, William Burch – 2
John Critchfield – 1 [note this is a second John Critchfield]
John Shours – 1
William Shours – 1
Reuben Shores - 1
The lists for 1776-1781 are lost. This is the next surviving list after 1775. Note that Wilkes County was formed from Surry in 1777, thus no Wilkes County residents should be in these lists. Polls are not listed in this tax list – only taxable land, horses & mules, and cattle.

Also, there is “Names of persons in Dyers Dist. By William Cook”, which includes a few dozen names on both the north and south sides of the Yadkin, and the Fall Creek area. Among these names are Amos, William, Joshua, and Nathaniel Critchfield; William, Charles, and Nathan Brewer; Isaac Emanuel Jr., and Nathaniel and Joseph Woodruff. Perhaps other names of significance that I did not copy.
Polls were males over 21 during this period. Exemptions for age were not established by law, and were left up to the county court.

Note: It is not clear how these two districts were defined. Both Lewis’ and Adkins’ districts had been combined into Salathiel Martin’s district until 1783, and both were mainly or entirely south of the Yadkin River. It also appears that most of Dyer’s district of 1782 had been folded into both. Lewis’s District was the westernmost, as it included Cobbs Creek and a number of people living in Wilkes County, while Adkin’s district included Pipes Creek. Thus it appears that Adkins’ is east of some creek and Lewis’s is west of that creek.

[The 1785 list notes that 150a were in Guilford County.]
The lists for 1787-1789 are missing. By 1790 Stokes County had been formed and several prior districts are now in Stokes. The specific geography of each district below changed slightly from year to year. The entries below are in the format “acreage – white polls – black polls”; e.g., 300-1 means 300 acres and one white poll. For 1791-1793 it appears white and black polls were combined – I don’t recall whether that was my transcription or whether the list did not differentiate, but I think the latter. Polls were males over 21 during this period. Age exemption is uncertain – it was pegged at age 50 by law in 1801, but prior to that time was set individually.

[1] Note that Oliver Robards (Olive Roberts) also appears on this list separately.
[2] His name is written slightly differently each year.
[3] Variously given as Wm. Nicholas, Nicholas Wm., N. William, William Nicholas, W. Nicholas
[4] Variously spelled Estage, Astage, Astadge, Stage
[5] “Ridge’s orphans” listed under William Cook Sr. Both entries are blank.
[6] He appealed one of these polls in court and was relieved of tax for the second poll.
[7] Only looked up Downeys in 1794, not before. Only difference from 1795 is Abraham had 475a and James had 200a.
[8] Listed as “constable” in 1796. Possibly exempt for that reason?
[9] Did not look for this name 1795-1799
[10] This entry is “The Est. of Wm Cook dec’d”. Not clear who the two white polls are. 125a is probably a typo, since taxable value is same as in 1820.
[11] This entry reads “Isaac Cook for self and mother”. All of Isaac Cook’s lists included 320a on N. side of Yadkin. Listed with various other parcels not apparently adjacent.
